Game Maker 6.x
From GMWiki, the Gamemaker Wiki.
The 6.x series of Game Maker was the first to use DirectX to do all of its multimedia procedures. Due to this radical change, many gmds from the 5.x series would not work, and the change was signified by the introduction of the gm6 extension.
The major difference between 6.x and earlier versions is the use of Direct3D instead of DirectDraw. This changed required most of the graphical system in GM to be rewritten. As a side effect, GM6 had limited support for 3D games.
