Game Maker Community
From GMWiki, the Gamemaker Wiki.
The Game Maker Community or GMC is the name of the official and largest dedicated to the discussion of Game Maker. It is owned and paid for by Mark Overmars, who has appointed a staff of moderators to help him run it.
[edit] History
The GMC has had a number of homes, and has mostly used either EZboard or the Invision Power Board software.
The original EZboard version of the GMC was supported by ads and had a much smaller and closer community than the forum we know today.
After DT was promoted to Administrator, he moved community to his account on Edgehost using Invision Board, paying for it out of his own pocket. He also registered the domain gmcommunity.com and used it for the forums and a community site powered by postnuke. This version introduced the Off Topic forum and was very successful.
After some extended problems with Edgehost, the GMC was moved back to Ezboard. This time Mark paid to have the ads removed using money raised by the new registered version of Game Maker. Eventually the ads returned in the form of target text links. During this time a large number of new users flooded the forums and many of the experienced users left. Towards the end of the time on Ezboard, DT removed the Off Topic forum because it was full of spam and garbage.
The forum returned to Invision Board, this time hosted by Invision and paid for by registration profits. After a time, the forum was using too many resources for it's shared hosting plan and was forced to move yet again. Smartforward.nl offered to host the forum for free in exchange for a small banner ad on every page. Eventually, however, the forum was too demanding for SmartForward as well. The decision was made to move the forum to a much more expensive dedicated server from Invision.
Even on the dedicated server, Server Load has become a problem.
